Thanks to your generous contributions, Un Verre d'Eau has stepped up its commitment in 2023! More than 450 000 € Over €450,000 was distributed to partner associations.

The Village of Smiles is materializing day by day in Madagascar, and will soon be able to welcome the street children of Tananarive.

200 tents, 1,000 blankets, 200 mattresses and 1,000 food parcels were distributed to earthquake survivors in Morocco. All these beneficiary families can now face the harshness of winter in the Atlas mountains with greater peace of mind.

Many refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh in Armenia who had to flee their homes in panic, taking only the bare essentials with them, received warm clothing for the winter.

The Smiles construction site

In 2018, a UN report showed that 2,400 children were abandoned on the streets of Tananarive, the capital. Five years later, that sad figure has risen to over 24,000!

To break the vicious circle of poverty and violence, these children need protection and love. They need education and vocational training. They need care and food... That's what 2400 Sourires is all about.

On a 9-hectare plot of land outside the city, the association is building a village that will accommodate 250 children... and that's just the first step!

Un Verre d'Eau first carried out a due diligence to Madagascar to assess the feasibility of the project and audit the association. An extensive communications campaign was then launched.

The fundraiser raised €250,000 for the association in 2023. This is just the first step in our commitment to 2400 Sourires!

The urgency to act

On Saturday, September 9, 2023, a terrible magnitude 7 earthquake killed nearly 3,000 people and injured as many more in Morocco. Faced with such a situation, every minute counts in saving lives, which is why the Un Verre d'Eau team organized an emergency fund-raising campaign. The aim: to provide significant aid to the SSF (Sauveteurs Sans Frontières) rescuers who were the first to intervene on site after the earthquake.

The hours following a disaster of this nature are crucial, but unfortunately not the only ones that claim lives. Humanitarian aid quickly became essential to care for the survivors, who were left without shelter, food or drinking water.

That's why this Un Verre d'Eau campaign also aims to help survivors over the long term by providing them with the essentials they need to survive. The campaign is run by Cœur & ACT, an efficient Moroccan association with in-depth knowledge of the High Atlas region.

Prevention is better than cure

In February 2022, 3 cyclones hit Madagascar in just 1 month. As a matter of urgency, Un Verre d'Eau organized a fund-raising campaign to help the hardest-hit villages as quickly as possible. A total of €50,000 was allocated to emergency aid.

Because your donations far exceeded our initial target, we were able to think beyond the emergency and prepare these villages for the next cyclones that will inevitably strike the island.

Our friends at Medair have set up a pilot risk reduction project in the Menabe region, which is frequently hit by destructive storms.

This innovative project involves :

Identifying cyclone and flood risks and the most vulnerable villages.
Setting up early warning systems for the population.
Training volunteers on site and equipping them to act within three days of a disaster.

This action has enabled over 370,000 people to be covered and better prepared. It also responded effectively to the immediate needs of 21,000 people affected by storms in 2022.

We have used the remaining €50,000 to extend this coverage to 50% of the inhabitants of the most exposed and therefore vulnerable areas (approximately 9.1 million people).

Running away from hatred

In October 2023, almost all the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) fled to Armenia in just a few days!

Driven out of their ancestral lands by Azerbaijan, more than 100,000 refugees left in a hurry, leaving their entire lives behind them: their homes, their farms, their animals, their memories, their parents' graves. And sometimes those of their children.

Our friend Pascal Portoukalian, who lives in Armenia, organized a campaign that Un Verre d'Eau supported and hosted. The campaign raised almost €60,000 for refugee families.

Many of these displaced people were forced to leave their homes with the bare minimum. Winter clothes, often bulky, had to be left behind. Our first action was to buy 700 jackets for families and children, so that they would suffer less from the winter cold.

Many other actions are planned to support these exiled families, so that their children can continue to go to school, and so that the traumas left by this war can be healed...

Impact

700 winter jackets have already been manufactured locally and distributed to refugee adults and children. And that's just the beginning! Many other actions aimed at refugee families are underway or planned for the near future.

In June 2023, a very special exhibition took place at the Halle des Blancs Manteaux in Paris. The 400 works exhibited in this magnificent venue were all the fruit of the work and imagination of children and young people with serious, chronic or psychiatric illnesses.

The non-profit organization NOC! "Nous On Crée", a veritable hospital art school, has been organizing art workshops for the past 18 years in several hospitals in the Paris region (Hôpital Necker-Enfants malades, Institut Curie and Hôpital Louis Mourier). Where illness plunges young patients into a dull, painful daily routine, punctuated by care, these workshops bring color and creativity, offering a space for expression and vital freedom. Last June, the association decided to give the spotlight to these young artists and their deeply sincere works.

In addition to enthusiastically helping to set up this event, Un Verre d'Eau has been collaborating with the NOC association's work through skills sponsorship since 2021 (notably by providing IT support and setting up impact analysis tools).

3 years after the explosion

Many of you are still supporting our very first fund-raising campaign for Lebanon, two years after its launch and three years after the devastating explosion. Lebanese families continue to face considerable challenges, in particular inflation, which is relentlessly and unsustainably eroding what little income still exists.

Added to these difficulties is the weight of a persistent regional conflict, which is causing further destabilization. Thanks to your monthly donations, once again this year we have been able to support the initiatives of CAHL, which looks after the well-being of the elderly, Tahaddi, an oasis in the heart of one of Beirut's most disadvantaged slums, and Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, which cares for the most destitute families in the Beirut mountains.

Impact

More than 1,500 families received food support and heating fuel for the winter.
180 children continue their schooling.
390 elderly people without resources received hot meals and support in the face of loneliness.

Management

In 2023, we have focused our efforts on reducing our costs, particularly with regard to payment fees. As you know, Un Verre d'Eau donates all funds collected to partner associations.

However, despite our best efforts, part of what we receive is cut by the fees imposed by payment platforms Stripe and Paypal on each transaction. That's why we have successfully negotiated reduced rates, to ensure that as much of every donation as possible actually reaches the charities.

Looking ahead to 2024, we also plan to test a new donation platform. This initiative is committed to simplifying the donation process and offering a fully English-speaking interface. Ultimately, the aim is also to optimize the costs associated with the collection tool.
