Sarah and Amina, the story of a courageous grandmother!

Unfortunately for many children in Chad, Amina's mother died during childbirth. To survive, Amina needs milk, but her grandmother Sarah is too old to breastfeed her, let alone buy her any. For many of these children, their only chance of growing up is Betsaleel.

Sarah and Amina, the story of a courageous grandmother!

More than 100 km were traveled in the hope of saving Amina.
Infant formula is all it takes to give her and thousands of other babies a chance to grow and thrive.
Mais les réserves de lait de l’association sont épuisées ! Betsaleel a besoin de notre aide urgente pour que le périple de toutes ces femmes ne soit pas vain !

Give more than milk,
Give hope for life

But the association's milk reserves are exhausted! Betsaleel needs our urgent help to ensure that these women's journey is not in vain!

55 years serving orphans and malnourished children

Betsaleel was born over 55 years ago when its founder, Monique Burkhardt, was entrusted with two abandoned newborn babies, doomed to certain death. For her and her husband Jeanpierre, it was the beginning of a great story in the service of Chadian orphans.

Over the years, thanks to the generosity of benefactors, the Betsaleel orphanage has rescued and supported 150 children into adulthood. In 1988, Betsaleel opened a Maternal and Infant Protection (PMI) center in Koumra to help the too many malnourished children who could not be accommodated in the orphanage for lack of space.

In 1991, Monique and Jeanpierre moved to N'Djaména to open a new orphanage at the request of the Chadian government. At the time, the capital, with a population of 800,000, had no facilities for orphaned and abandoned children.

What began as a simple hut where the first children were taken in has grown to include two centers offering 16,000 consultations a year. From 20 boxes of milk received in 1969, the structure now distributes 8 tonnes of infant formula, saving thousands of children every year.

1 in 5 children die before the age of 5!

This is the tragic reality facing families and women in Chad. Poverty, lack of health infrastructure and often non-existent access to drinking water make every birth a fierce battle for the child's survival.

The situation is getting worse, as this Sahelian country is particularly vulnerable to global warming! Every year, floods and droughts deplete harvests and drive up the price of foodstuffs, already out of reach for most families. With an average annual income of €636, families find themselves unable to meet the cost of infant formula, which can be as much as €280 for the first six months of a newborn's life.

Currently, 4 million people are food insecure, while the need for nutritional assistance is pressing for one and a half million children under the age of 5.

Currently, 4 million people are food insecure, while the need for nutritional assistance is pressing for one and a half million children under the age of 5.

In 2020, we made our first appeal for donations to finance the formula milk needed for the children.
Here are the miracles Betsaleel has performed thanks to your generosity:

58 000

consultations, including 16,000 newborns

1 700

hospitalizations, including 1,344 recoveries and 233 children referred*.

26 700

kg of milk powder distributed and/or used in our centers

After 4 years of miracles made possible by your generosity, the milk supply is starting to run out again.
Our support is essential if Betsaleel's vital work is to continue.

*Children with serious illnesses that cannot be treated at the centers (severe malaria, severe anemia, etc.) are referred to partner hospitals in N'Djaména and Koumra. Unfortunately, too many children arrive too late at the centers and cannot be cured despite the best efforts and care of the medical team.

Comprehensive care

Betsaleel's action doesn't stop at milk! The association provides complete care for the child. Every year, 16 000 children's consultations take place in the centers, where their growth and state of health are monitored.

For children suffering from malnutrition, Betsaleel offers nutritional support with formula milk or enriched flour, depending on age. The children return regularly to the center for follow-up and to receive the milk they need for their growth.

Children suffering from the most severe forms of malnutrition are hospitalized on site until they reach optimum weight. During their stay, the medical team monitors their growth and, if necessary, feeds them through a nasogastric tube. Once recovered, the children return home, but remain under close ambulatory surveillance.

Orphans receive special attention because these are the most vulnerable children. Caring for an extra child in often large families is a challenge, all the more so when the baby has to be bottle-fed. For these children, Betsaleel provides not only nutritional support, but also education when the child reaches school age.

Acting before the emergency

Prevention is central to Betsaleel's initiatives. Around a quarter of the children we see present illnesses that are likely to be at the root of their malnutrition. For example, a child suffering from diarrhoea is unable to absorb the nutrients necessary for growth.

Some diseases can be prevented with a simple vaccination. That's why, every Thursday, Betsaleel organizes vaccination days at its Koumra center. Over 1,000 children a year are vaccinated against diseases such as polio, tetanus, diphtheria and hepatitis B, which still kill far too many children in the country.

Other illnesses could be prevented by following certain essential childcare rules. Unfortunately, the vast majority of women at the centers have never attended school, depriving them of this crucial knowledge. In fact, only 19% of adult women in Chad are literate.

To remedy this, educational sessions are organized in the centers as well as in the surrounding villages. These sessions cover essential topics such as hygiene practices, water use, the principles of a balanced diet, essential nutrients, and proper child care. Better knowledge can often prevent the most dramatic situations.
